The year 1762 was not an easy year for Central Europe. Frederick the Great ended his seven-year (3rd Silesian) war against the Habsburg Empire and its allies, destroying much in the process. Silesia and Dresden were some of them. Augustus III, the Saxon King of Poland and great patron of the arts, was in exile in Warsaw. For his birthday on October 7th, he commissioned his favorite court composer Johann Adolf Hasse to perform the opera "Il re pastore" in Hubertusburg in 1755, when times were still peaceful. This October 7, 1762 would be his last birthday. On October 5, 1763 he died in Dresden, which had been destroyed by the Prussians.

The theme "Il re pastore" was certainly not chosen by chance. Not only for August III: Johann Christoph Richter (1700-1785), who was not as well known as his colleague Hasse as the Dresden Kapellmeister, chose the same theme in exactly the same year, but on the German translation of the 1755 Metastasio libretto, probably to do justice to the educational potential of this libretto.

Actually, it's about a shepherd who is elected king by Alexander the Great and who proves with virtue and his human feelings of love that he really deserves it.

It is therefore a political manifesto, written in the time of the European Enlightenment and before the French Revolution, as an admonition for the rulers of Europe to look out for their people and be guided by love and common sense instead of starting poverty and wars.

With the support of the Fund for the Performing Arts, Eleni Ioannidou researched the music of Johann Christoph Richter. The music by Johann Adolf Hasse was kindly made available to us by Francois Hou from Paris.

Between 18-23.9. accompanies the ensemble in rehearsing the music, the harpsichordist Raphael Alpermann (Academy for Early Music, Berlin). The result will be presented in two concerts on September 22nd in the Frauenkirche in Görlitz (at 8 p.m.) and on September 23rd. to be heard in the baroque palace of Königshain (at 7:00 p.m.).

Plot

Il re pastore is based on a 1751 libretto by the Italian master poet Pietro Metastasio, a big name in the genre of serious opera. The source code comes from Torquato Tasso's early play Aminta. It takes us back to the time of Alexander the Great, who defeated the tyrant Strato in his last campaign and is now on a quest to find the rightful king of Sidon. King Alessandro soon discovers that Aminta, seemingly just a humble shepherd, is heir to the throne of Sidon.

Aminta's sudden rise in power strains his relationship with the shepherdess Elisa, as Alessandro proposes a marriage between the new king and Tamiri, Strato's daughter, to ensure a peaceful and lasting transition of power. Neither Tamiri nor Aminta want that, because each of them is in love with someone else. After much drama, King Alessandro's legendary wisdom and sense of justice prevail and Aminta ascends the throne of Sidon with his true love Elisha at his side.(www.veniceoperatickets.com)
