Song recital in Castle Książ with

Vincent Kusters, baritone

Doriana Tchakarova, piano

Songs by Robert Schumann, Hugo Wolf, Hans Pfitzner, Franz Schubert and Bolko von Hochberg

As part of the 33rd Silesian Music Festival. Funded by the Erika Simon Foundation, the Ministry of the Interior of the Free State of Saxony and Sven-Alexis Fischer.

Bolko von Hochberg, the composer and founder of the Silesian Music Festival in Görlitz 100 years ago, was born in the largest castle in Silesia and one of the largest in Poland: Castle Książ. Built by the Silesian Piast Bolko I in the 13th century, the impressive monument came after many Bohemian and Silesian rulers, in 1503 for the first time in the possession of the Hochberg. Since then it has been connected with the history of the most important Silesian noble family von Hochberg, which also included the artistic director and composer Bolko von Hochberg. Silesian musical and literary heritage was important to Hochberg. During his directorship at the Royal Theater in Berlin, "Hanneles Himmelfahrt" premiered on November 14, 1893, almost as a birthday present to the young writer Gerhart Hauptmann, who came from Bad Salzbrunn, which also belonged to the Hochbergs.

Under this premise, it is understandable that we are dedicating this first song recital of the finalists and prizewinners of the Bolko-von-Hochberg international song competition, which took place in Görlitz in June 2022, to the most important Silesian poet: Joseph Freiherr von Eichendorff. Born in 1788 in Lubowitz (today Łubowice) near Ratibor in Upper Silesia and died in 1857 in Neisse (Nysa), the Romantic poet is one of the most frequently set in music german poet, with around 5000 settings of his poems. Among the best-known settings are the Liederkreis op.39 by Robert Schumann and the Eichendorff-Lieder by Hugo Wolf, which can be heard this evening.

The young Dutch baritone Vincent Kusters is one of the most promising Lied-singers of his generation. The German-Bulgarian pianist Doriana Tchakarova is one of the best-known song accompanists in Germany, teaches at the Hochschule für Musik in Stuttgart, has won prizes in many competitions and has made several important sound recordings as a song accompanist. Now the two artists are meeting for the first time at Castle Książ. As already mentioned, the program includes a selection of songs based on poetry by Joseph von Eichendorff, songs by Franz Schubert and finally a few songs by Bolko von Hochberg.
